While writing the Ultimate Guide to the Nightmare World, for the magazine to look more "authentic", I had the idea of placing some fake ads (for real hacks though) here and there, to show my support to other game creators.
Among them Shining, from Studio Vetea, whose work on Papi Commando, a character he created, I wanted to put under the spotlights.
Of course I used screenshots from the latest version of the game, as well as a background image corresponding to one of the first levels of the game. I added that "Apocalypse Now / Rambo II / Full Metal Jacket" fiery background and that badass slogan to emphasize on the parodic aspect of the game. Among my various sources of inspiration were the early ads for the Metal Slug games.
To finish the job, I created this artwork of Papi Commando in full-on war-machine mode, trying to recreate the style of SEGA's 1980s and 1990S ads.
